Motorcycle, RV, and Boat Insurance in Fort Worth: The DFW Recreational Rider's Guide

Your car insurance doesn't cover your motorcycle, RV, boat, or ATV. Here's what each needs, real 2026 Texas rates, and the storage-only trick that saves seasonal riders 40-60%.

The short version

  • Your auto policy doesn't cover motorcycles, RVs, boats, or ATVs — they're separate vehicle classes that need their own coverage.
  • Rough 2026 Texas ranges: motorcycle $40-120/month, RV $500-2,500/year depending on class, boat $200-800/year for a typical rec boat.
  • If your ride sits parked for part of the year, a storage-only policy can save 40-60% during those months.
  • Call 817-922-8031 to get it set up right.

Why Your Car Insurance Doesn't Cover These

Auto policies are written specifically for "private passenger auto." Motorcycles, RVs, boats, and ATVs each fall into their own vehicle class with different risk profiles, so they need dedicated policies.

There's some limited overlap: a homeowners policy may cover an ATV stored at home for short, occasional use on your own property, and boats under a certain length sometimes get limited coverage bundled into a home policy. But for actual regular use — trail riding, towing to the lake, cruising the highway — you need a policy built for that vehicle.

Motorcycle Insurance — Texas Rates & Coverage

Texas requires the same minimum liability for motorcycles as for cars: 30/60/25. Full coverage is worth considering for anything under 5 years old.

  • Standard cruiser: $40-70/month
  • Sport bike: $80-150/month
  • High-performance bike: $150-300/month

Discounts to ask about: motorcycle safety course completion, multi-vehicle bundling, garage storage, and low annual mileage. Passenger liability is often a separate line item — add it if you regularly carry a passenger. And don't forget custom parts and equipment coverage — aftermarket exhausts, seats, and chrome aren't covered by a standard policy unless you add this.

RV Insurance — 2 Categories, Very Different Policies

Motorized RVs (Class A/B/C): These need a full auto-style policy, typically $800-$2,500/year. Texas minimum liability is 30/60/25, but given how much these vehicles are worth, full coverage is strongly recommended.

Towable RVs (travel trailers, fifth-wheels): Usually $300-$800/year. Basic liability is often handled through an endorsement on your truck's policy, while physical damage coverage needs its own separate policy.

A couple of things worth knowing either way:

  • Full-timer coverage is for people who live in their RV year-round — it adds personal liability and personal property protection similar to a homeowners policy.
  • Storage vs. full-use: If your RV sits parked most of the year, a storage-only policy can cut your rate 40-60%.

Boat Insurance — What Texas Requires and What You Should Actually Carry

Texas doesn't legally require boat insurance, but most marinas and any lienholder financing the boat will require proof of coverage.

Recommended coverage includes hull protection, liability (minimum $100,000, ideally $300,000+), uninsured boater coverage, medical payments, and on-water towing.

  • Typical Texas rec boat (18-24 ft): $200-500/year
  • Bass boat with heavy tackle: $400-800/year
  • Larger cruiser (30 ft+): $800-2,000/year

Consider a personal effects endorsement to cover tackle, electronics, and gear that aren't automatically included.

ATV/UTV/Side-by-Side

Coverage needs depend heavily on how you use it. Homeowners insurance *may* cover an ATV used occasionally on your own property, but for regular trail riding, off-property use, or hauling to public land, you need a dedicated ATV policy. Expect roughly $150-400/year in Texas. Check with your carrier before assuming you're covered.

The Storage-Only Policy Trick

Most recreational vehicles are seasonal. A boat sits November through February; a motorcycle often sits December through February in Texas. If you're carrying full liability coverage year-round on a vehicle that's parked for a quarter of the year, you're paying for protection you don't need during that stretch.

A storage-only policy covers comprehensive risks — theft, hail, fire, vandalism — while the vehicle is parked, without the liability cost. This typically saves 40-60% during the storage months. Switch back to a full policy when you're ready to ride or sail again. Rainbow can schedule this switch automatically so you don't have to remember to call.

Trailer Insurance

Trailer liability while towing is often included automatically as "attached" coverage under your truck's policy. Physical damage to the trailer itself, though, usually needs its own endorsement or a separate policy — check your declarations page to see what limit, if any, applies to the trailer.

Frequently asked questions

Does my car insurance cover my motorcycle?

No. Motorcycles are a separate vehicle class and need their own policy.

How much is motorcycle insurance in Texas?

Typically $40-300 a month depending on the type of bike, with cruisers on the low end and high-performance bikes on the high end.

Do I need insurance for a boat in Texas?

It's not legally required by the state, but most marinas and any lender financing your boat will require it.

What is a storage-only policy?

A reduced policy that covers theft, fire, and weather damage while a vehicle is parked, without liability coverage — used to save money during the off-season.

Does my homeowners insurance cover my ATV?

Sometimes, for limited use on your own property — but not for trail riding or off-property use. Check with your carrier.

Can I bundle motorcycle insurance with auto?

Yes, and doing so typically qualifies you for a multi-policy discount.
