Mansfield SR-22 Insurance and Filing

An SR-22 is a certificate your insurance carrier files with Texas DPS proving you carry state minimum liability. We write the underlying policy, file the certificate electronically, and explain the two-year requirement in plain language before you spend anything.

Mansfield sits across county lines, and it matters

Mansfield spans Tarrant, Johnson and Ellis counties, which is unusual and occasionally confusing. Where your case was heard determines which court you deal with, but the SR-22 requirement itself is statewide and identical either way.
What the county split does affect is your rating. Carriers rate on the address where the vehicle is garaged, and a Mansfield household on the Tarrant side can be rated differently from one a few streets into Johnson County. When you call, give us the exact address rather than just the city, because a quote built on the wrong county assumption will not hold. The process does not vary. Bind a liability policy at 30/60/25 or better, have the carrier transmit the SR-22 to DPS, and let the record update before attempting reinstatement or an occupational license petition. We file electronically and confirm it back to you the same business day in most cases. Our office has been at 2209 8th Ave in Fort Worth since 1993, which puts us close to the Tarrant County courts if your attorney needs proof of filing in a particular form. Tell us what the court wants and we will produce it. The requirement generally runs two years from the conviction or judgment date. Buying the policy late does not shorten that window.

Long commutes, work trucks, and what they do to the premium

Mansfield drivers commute. US-287 and SH-360 carry a large share of this city into Fort Worth, Arlington and south Dallas every day, and annual mileage is a direct rating factor on every quote you will receive. A driver with a violation and a 25,000-mile year is a materially different risk to a carrier than the same driver at 8,000 miles.
If your mileage estimate on a prior policy was wrong, correct it. People routinely carry an inflated number from years ago and pay for miles they no longer drive. Work trucks are the other Mansfield-specific issue. A lot of households here have a pickup that does double duty, personal on weekends and hauling tools or towing a trailer during the week. A personal auto policy excludes business use, so a claim that happens on a job can be denied outright, and a denial that leads to non-renewal while you are on an SR-22 becomes a lapse. A lapse can restart your two years. So tell us honestly how the truck gets used. If it is genuinely commercial we will write it commercially, and if it is personal with occasional hauling there are endorsements that cover it. Either is cheaper than a denied claim plus a suspended license. Multi-vehicle households also do better here than they realize. If there are two or three vehicles and a Mansfield ISD teenager on the policy, the structure matters more than the carrier's advertised rate.

Keeping the filing alive, and re-shopping later

Once the SR-22 is on file, your carrier is required to notify DPS if the policy cancels or lapses, automatically and without a meaningful grace period. That single mechanism is responsible for most of the trouble we see.
A missed payment is a lapse. Cancelling because you sold the vehicle is a lapse. Being non-renewed after a denied commercial-use claim is a lapse. Each one means a new suspension, new reinstatement fees, and often a restart of the two-year requirement. We would rather set the payment schedule at a level you can hold for twenty-four consecutive months than win the sale with a low first payment. And we will tell you the renewal premium up front, because a surprise at renewal is how lapses happen. If you stop owning a vehicle, switch to a non-owner SR-22 rather than cancelling. It satisfies DPS at a lower premium and covers you in borrowed and rented cars. Two more things while we have your file open. Add uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. And put a note on year three, because most carriers stop surcharging a major violation somewhere between three and five years out, and the carrier that is cheapest for you as a high-risk Mansfield driver almost certainly will not be cheapest once the violation stops counting. We re-shop it rather than waiting for you to ask.

"They asked how I actually use my truck, which no other agent had bothered to do. Turned out I was one work claim away from losing the policy and my license. Fixed it, filed the SR-22 electronically, and the price was better than the two quotes I already had."

Mansfield SR-22 Filing FAQs

Mansfield is in three counties. Does that change my SR-22?

Not the requirement itself, which is statewide. It does change your rating, because carriers price on the address where the vehicle is garaged. Give us your exact street address rather than just Mansfield so the quote holds up when the policy is issued.

How soon can the filing be done?

Usually the same business day. Once the liability policy is bound and paid we transmit the certificate to Texas DPS electronically and confirm the filing back to you.

I use my truck for work sometimes. Is that a problem on an SR-22?

It can be a serious one. Personal auto policies exclude business use, so a claim that happens on a job can be denied, and a denial leading to non-renewal counts as a lapse that can restart your two years. Tell us how the truck is actually used and we will cover it correctly.

Will my rate ever come back down?

Yes. Most carriers stop surcharging a major violation after three to five years, and the two-year filing requirement ends before that. We diary the file and re-shop it when the window opens, because the best carrier for a high-risk driver is rarely the best one afterward.
